Natalie Portman

People we love… Natalie Portman

She’s smart, stylish, sexy… what’s not to love about Natalie Portman?

She’s not just an actress – she’s a Harvard graduate, human rights and animal activist, fashion designer, model, mother… the list goes on. She is reported to avoid eating animal products and does not wear fur or leather – even designing a range of vegan footwear in 2007.

But it is acting for which we know her best, since she first shot to stardom for her role as Queen Amidala in Star Wars, The Phantom Menace (1999) to one of her more recent performances – her role in Black Swan (2010), which won her an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.

Portman is a woman who knows her own mind and as a result has charted a graceful course through the perils and pitfalls of Hollywood celebrity, managing a successful career without compromising on her values, which have seen her decline roles such as Lolita because she disapproves of the exposure of young people to sex in films.

In recent years she married ballet dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied and become a mother for the first time, to son Aleph. The family is moving to Paris in 2014, where we presume she’ll cement her fluency in the French language (she’s already fluent in Hebrew and in conversational German, Japanese and Spanish).

In a departure from demure (if Black Swan wasn’t departure enough), Portman is said to be starring in Jane Got a Gun, due for release in August 2014. She’s also rumoured to be planning her directorial debut on a film adaptation of Israeli author Amos Oz’s autobiographical novel A Tale of Love and Darkness. We’re standing by, and can’t wait to see what this style icon and super achiever does next!
